Treasury Board and Finance, Edmonton – Tax and Revenue Administration (TRA) is responsible for the collection of revenue and the administration of Alberta’s tax, revenue and related benefit programs. The focus of our organization is to ensure a fair, efficient and effective provincial tax and revenue system.

Collections and Recoveries within TRA initiates filing compliance work and draws on its substantial expertise to collect tax debt, Alberta student loans, crown debts, and employment standards judgments.

Role Responsibilities

Are you a strong independent thinker? Someone who is skilled at problem solving and like working in a team atmosphere? Then this position in Filing Compliance and Collections (FCC) may be for you!

TRA runs on collaborative teamwork and has leaders that care about the success of their staff. The FCC group helps to ensure equity for taxpayers and fairness in Alberta’s tax administration by following up on outstanding tax returns and payments. The group deals with corporate tax, commodity taxes and levies, and post judgment collection services for Alberta employees. It plays a key role in maximizing tax revenues that help support the province’s infrastructure.

As a Senior Compliance Officer, reporting to a Group Lead, you will evaluate information, interpret Federal and Provincial Corporate and Commodity Tax Legislation, investigate problems, resolve issues, complete complex files and assist other compliance officers with more complex files, making sure that best practices and procedures are followed. You will also help identify areas of risk and provide recommendations in accordance with legislation and policy. Some cases can be complex and will require strong analytical, research and problem solving skills.

You will be a member of a processing group and expected to participate actively in fostering the team culture along with meeting the team production goals.

A positive attitude, adaptability, and commitment to working with others are essential in this role. Strong written and verbal communication skills are vital in connecting with external stakeholders, which include other jurisdictions, tax accountants and their representatives. Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel is required.

Qualifications

A university degree supplemented with two years of experience in a collections and/or tax administration environment is required.

The following equivalent education/experience will be considered:

1 year of education for 1 year of experience; or

1 year of experience for 1 year of education.
