The Resource Stewardship Division plays a central role in managing Alberta’s natural resources through science-based planning, policy development, and regulatory oversight. It ensures the sustainable use and protection of Alberta’s land, water, and biodiversity by integrating environmental data, supporting conservation initiatives, and guiding responsible resource development.

Role Responsibilities As the Surface Water Quality Data Supervisor, you will lead a team of surface water data specialists responsible for all aspects of surface water quality data management including surface water, sediment, phytoplankton, periphyton, and invertebrate data. This role oversees the acquisition, quality assurance and control, and management of electronic reporting systems for surface water quality data submitted by non-regulated parties.

Your leadership will ensure the data quality needed to support environmental decision-making across Alberta.

Key Responsibilities

  • Supervise and mentor a team of data stewards and technical experts.
  • Oversee data acquisition, validation, storage and distribution of data through environmental data portals.
  • Lead the development and enhancement of databases and reporting systems.
  • Provide expert guidance to internal and external stakeholders on data use and compliance.
  • Collaborate with policy makers, scientists, and cross-ministry teams to ensure data supports environmental outcomes.
  • Represent the department on committees and working groups, contributing to system-wide improvements.

About Your Work Environment

In this role, you will primarily be working in an office setting located in Edmonton. You will have regular and on-going contact with industry, consultants, other government staff and the general public. Occasional travel may be required to support the priority work of the Branch.

Qualifications

Required

  • A two-year technical diploma in Environmental Sciences or a related field with six years of related experience in environmental data management, environmental sciences or analytical chemistry.
