Edmonton, AB The Schizophrenia Society of Alberta (SSA) is a not-for-profit organization that improves quality-of-life for Albertans affected by schizophrenia and related disorders. We are proud of our three housing facilities that provide housing for people living with serious mental illness and at risk of homelessness.

The SSA is currently hiring for a Casual Cook at our housing facility, Iris Court, located in Edmonton. Iris Court is a housing program owned and operated by the Schizophrenia Society of Alberta, which houses 21 individuals living with severe and persistent mental illness.

Duties / Responsibilities

Three Meals and two snacks are provided daily. Applicants will oversee all cooking, storage management, and prepare a healthy, approved menu. While maintaining the Standards of Supportive Living Requirements, the applicants should be familiar with kitchen cleanliness, preparing meals according to an established meal plan, knowledge of portioning and safe food handling.

Applicants must have the ability to keep all tenant matters strictly confidential and exercise courtesy and cooperation towards the tenants.

Qualifications

  • Must have experience working in a licensed supportive housing facility
  • 3 years dietary experience preferably in the health field
  • Must have the ability to stand, walk, and perform tasks for the duration of a shift (10 hours), with minimal sitting
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Food Handling Certificate preferred
  • Current criminal record check required
  • Ability to work independently or with a team
  • Follow kitchen cleaning processes
  • Have knowledge of meal portioning
  • Fluent in English with good written and verbal skills
  • WHIMIS/First Aid preferred

Physical Demands

  • Ability to stand and walk for a 10-hour shift
  • Frequent bending, lifting, carrying, and reaching while performing cooking and cleaning tasks.
  • Ability to lift and carry items up to 25 lbs
  • Comfort with repetitive tasks such as sweeping, mopping, and sanitizing surfaces
  • General stamina to manage a combination of physical tasks throughout the shift

Casual: Guaranteed 1 - ten-hour shift per week and additional coverage as needed

Rate: $23.00 per hour
