Senior Geomodeller
The Opportunity
ÂÂ
The Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) is seeking a Senior Geomodeller to join the Alberta Geological Survey (AGS) within our Geoscience Innovation team. In this role, you will apply advanced geomodelling expertise to some of Alberta's most important subsurface challenges, including induced seismicity, basin-scale geological characterization, and strategic geoscience modernization initiatives. This role is a critical piece of AGS' geospatial intelligence capabilities.
In this role you will will be a major contributor to both strategic and hands-on work across multi-disciplinary projects related to oil and gas, minerals, groundwater and other natural resources. You will work alongside data management experts, data scientists, geologists and geophysicists, remote sensing experts, reservoir engineers, as well as regulatory specialists, business stakeholders, and IT partners to develop geological models and technology architectures that support both regulatory decision making and enhance subsurface characterization and knowledge development.
You will leverage and evolve the Geological Framework of Alberta along side vast archives of industry and AGS data to place Alberta at the forefront of modern, 3D-integrated, geospatially-aware, and AI-enabled subsurface intelligence capabilities. Beyond delivering technical work, you will play a key role in strengthening AGS's internal modelling capability by sharing technical knowledge with staff, advancing modelling standards, and helping shape the future direction of geomodelling within the organization. This role offers a unique opportunity to influence major provincial geoscience initiatives while helping build sustainable technical capacity for the future.
What your day-to-day will look like
- Contribute to the development of geological and geomodelling solutions and apply advance geomodelling techniques to subsurface characterization projects associated with disposal, reservoir performance, induced seismicity assessment, and regulatory priorities.
- Develop and maintain regional and field-scale geological models to support strategic basin management. Contribute structural and stratigraphic modelling expertise to basin analysis activities and broader geological interpretation projects
- Develop repeatable workflows that can be applied across multiple geological settings.
- Advance integration between geomodelling, geospatial, and enterprise data initiatives. Collaborate with internal subject matter experts to strengthen connections between geological models, geospatial datasets, and enterprise information systems.
- Identify opportunities to modernize AGS geomodelling practices. Evaluate current modelling approaches and recommend practical improvements related to workflows, chronostratigraphic and lithostratigraphic frameworks, uncertainty management, reproducibility, and technical assurance.
- Provide senior technical review and quality assurance. Support model governance, documentation, uncertainty analysis, and consistency across AGS modelling projects.
- Provide technical coaching and mentorship to AGS staff. Work alongside geologists, geomodellers and reservoir engineers to build modelling competency through project-based learning, technical reviews, and knowledge transfer.
What we're looking for in you
- University degree in Geology, Geological Engineering, Earth Sciences, Geoscience, or a related discipline.
- Registered, or eligible for registration, as a Professional Geoscientist (P.Geo.) or Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in Alberta.
- 7+ years in the energy industry, with progressive related experience in geomodelling or a related field.
- Extensive experience developing and interpreting geological and geomodelling projects in sedimentary basin settings, at regional- and basin-scale, ideally related to induced seismicity, reservoir characterization, disposal, and subsurface risk assessment.
- Experience integrating geological, geophysical, engineering, and other spatial datasets into defensible subsurface interpretations. Experience working with stratigraphic frameworks, facies/property modelling, and geostatistics.
- Strong understanding of uncertainty assessment, model validation, and geological quality assurance practices. Experience establishing modelling standards, technical assurance frameworks, and enterprise modelling practices is considered an asset.
- Demonstrated expertise with industry-standard geomodelling platforms such as Petrel and related geological modelling software. Experience with Leapfrog is preferred.
- Proven ability to mentor technical staff and communicate complex geological concepts to multidisciplinary audiences.
- Strong interpersonal, collaboration, and stakeholder engagement skills.
- Ability to work independently while balancing multiple priorities in a dynamic technical environment.
- Familiarity with public-sector geoscience organizations and regulatory environments is considered an asset.
Additional Information
- All applicants must be legally entitled to work in Canada at the time of application.
