About the position

The Ministry of Jobs, Economy, Trade and Immigration is responsible for leading efforts to grow Alberta’s economy by supporting Alberta’s entrepreneurs and employers, promoting trade and investment, helping attract, recruit and retain skilled workers, and promoting safe, fair and healthy workplaces. The Economic Strategy and Investment Division is focused on ensuring that strategies and related policies are developed with a broad economic lens and line of sight to economic growth and job creation. The division leverages stakeholder intelligence, robust economic principles, and advanced data analytics to formulate effective strategies that support job-creating investments in Alberta.

Responsibilities

  • Lead industry policy and program development by advancing policy recommendations, conducting strategic research and analysis, designing performance evaluation frameworks, engaging stakeholders, and managing complex projects to deliver priority outcomes on time and within scope.
  • Lead the analysis of emerging manufacturing trends, policy issues, and cross-jurisdictional developments, while advancing industry intelligence capabilities and assessing the competitiveness impacts of external government initiatives to support evidence-based decision-making.
  • Lead stakeholder engagement and cross-government collaboration to assess and communicate industry impacts of policy, regulatory, and program decisions, providing strategic advice to senior leadership on economic growth and competitiveness issues.
  • Oversee the preparation of high-quality, timely briefing materials, action requests, ministerial correspondence, and executive communications to support informed decision-making by senior leadership and the Minister.
  • Provide strategic, systems-thinking leadership to guide staff and directors in achieving branch and ministry outcomes through effective decision-making, collaboration across program areas, stakeholder engagement, staff development, and a commitment to Alberta Public Service values, diversity, and an inclusive workplace culture.
  • Lead operational planning, budgeting, forecasting, performance measurement, contract oversight, and cross-functional administrative and corporate initiatives (including HR, finance, and engagement activities) to ensure alignment with government policy, stakeholder expectations, and strategic priorities.

Requirements

  • University graduation in Business, Economic Development, Public Administration, Economics, or other related field plus 4 years progressively responsible related experience.
  • Related experience or education may be considered as an equivalency on a one for one basis.
  • Political acumen and a thorough understanding of government decision making processes.
  • Strong interpersonal and problem solving skills.
  • Sound knowledge of project management approaches and experience leading a project team to successful achievement of objectives.
  • Strong working knowledge of policy development, land use planning, and economic development principles, tools, and practices, specifically those related to best practices in economic development of businesses, communities and regions.
  • Strong Communication Skills (both written and oral).

Nice-to-haves
